http://www.1stopbeadshop.com/visiting-guest-artist-classes-huib-petersen-c-223_234_415.html

Butterflies - Fri, Jan 22 - This class is for all those who voted for Sweat Pea, Russian Summer, or Monarch. You will choose which pattern you prefer to work from. Huib will custom teach to each butterfly. In the afternoon he will cover how the Sweat Pea or leaves are made (though you will be concentrating on making the butterfly in class). Level 3 - Pre-req - Peyote. Practice on Russian leaf recommended but not required. 6 hr w/ lunch break.

Up & Over - Sat, Jan 23 This class is for all those that voted for Up & Over, Honky Tonk, My Father's Watchband, or any other Tubular RAW class. Once you learn the stitch, you can apply it to any of these designs. Learn Tubular Right Angle Weave from the expert. I first learned tubular RAW from Huib, and I can tell you there is no better teacher. He tells me that he can take any student - even an advance beginner - and teach them this stitch. Level 2 - Advanced Beginner - Right Angle Weave recommended but not required. 6 hr w/ lunch break.

Starfish - Fri, Jan 22 - This class is for all those voted for Enchanted Waters, Swim Around my Wrist, or other nauticle themes. He will teach the starfish or sea star which is done in tubular Peyote. Other sea creatures will be discussed but not taught in this 3 hour class. Level 2 - Peyote suggested but not required.

Russian Bead Lace - Sat, Jan 23 - This class is for all those that voted for a leaf class. In this class you will learn to make the Russian Leaf (increaing/decreasing peyote) and variations like the Oak Leaf will be discussed. Leaves are an incredibly practice embellishment to be able to add to any beadweaving piece. Level 3 - 3 hour. Pre-req Peyote.

Visiting Guest Artist at 1 Stop Bead Shop - Hannah Rosner

Okay, this is sort of self serving, but since Lisa put this into the newsletter, I'm translating it into the blog...
-Hannah
----------
Visiting Guest Artist Announcement:
Only 2 Weeks to Hannah
In case you aren't familiar with our Hannah, she is really one of us, who because of her move to Taos, is now a "Visiting" Guest Artist.

During the time she lived in Columbus, she worked and taught at 1 Stop for nearly 3 years. Now, you see her work every time you visit our website, as she is our one Stop "Web Master."

Hannah has been designing with seed beads and lampworking for over 20 years. She was recently awarded 2nd place in the national 2009 Toho Emerging Artist Competition, and she placed in the 2009 Bead & Button Bead Dreams Competition at the Bead & Button Show.

Hannah will be here for 1 week beginning Mon, Dec 7 to share her knowledge with us. She has beadweaving classes for beginners and advanced, an intermediate lampwork class, and a first time class on Etsy & Ebay.

Japanese Screen Peyote Bracelet - Mon, Dec 7 - Beginner level Peyote class with a touch of wire work.

Selling On-line - Intro to Etsy & Ebay - Sat, Dec 12 - Learn to set up Etsy and eBay shops and sign up for Paypal sellers accounts. Step by step set-up for shops and listing your first items. No need to actually know anyting about beading for this class since you will be able to set up your shops for any handmade crafts. However, you need to have some familiarity with your computer. If you have a laptop with wireless feel free to bring it along; you can work with her in class to list your first item and set up online shops. No photography covered.

Nothing But Fringe - Techniques Workshop - Tue, Dec 8 - Back by request. Overview of at least 8 different types of fringe. Sample fringe attached to a booklet and bound.

Intermediate Lampwork - Twisties & Stringers - Wed, Dec 9 - Still having trouble with stringers balling up on you? We'll discuss some basic through advanced twisties and how to control stringer placement.

Sea Form Pendant - Wed, Dec 9 - ADVANCED! Make a sculptural peyote pendant or beaded bead around a lampwork bead and cover in crazy fringe. Will be finished in class!

Royal Ruffles - Thur, Dec 10- Brand New Design - This thing is stunning. Not as hard as it looks, but how DOES it DO THAT?! The only thing you need to make it is knowledge of Peyote and time.

To see photos of these projects and to register, head on by the 1 Stop Bead Shop Website: http://www.1stopbeadshop.com/visiting-guest-artist-classes-hannah-rosner-c-223_234_292.html

Spotlight on Our Friends: Julie Hunkar at 1 Stop Bead Shop

Julie Hunkar writes: My St. Petersburg w/Fringe (above) was inspired by a project I saw in Bead and Button Magazine. I bought the Fire Agate Pendant at the B&B Show in 2008. So using the colors in the pendant, I amped it up. I decided on branching fringe to match the delicate fern-like branches of the St. Petersburg stitch and went to town adding the fringe at the bottom. This has been a popular class in order to learn a more complicated version of St. Petersburg.

I took Hannah Rosner's Taos Sunset (below) Class in August of 2008. It was a wonderful class teaching us tubular and triangle peyote and a spiral fringe. It took 4 weeks of fairly steady evening work to get it done after the class, and it weighs a ton, but it is one of my favorite pieces. Every Hannah class is fun and you always learn cool stuff - sign up for a least one of her classes this December, you won't be disappointed!

MORE special events at 1 Stop Bead Shop this weekend!

Hello Bead Friends!

Jeannette Cook showed up with 3x more stuff than we ever dreamed! She brought almost every design she makes.

  • Some are kits - no worries about having to pick colors - the master picked them.

  • Some are just patterns - no extra bead cost if you're not going to start them right away!

  • There are only 23 Mastering the Curl kits left. She DOES NOT sell the patterns or kits on her website or in stores. Usually the ONLY place you can get them is at a large bead show she is participating in. She made an exception for her friends at 1 Stop. Many of you missed her class 18 months ago. Now you can own the kit. If you can do Peyote - you can do this design. If you can't do Peyote - we have a class for that! ;-)

Special Events at 1 Stop Bead Shop this weekend!

We have two special events to entice you this upcoming weekend!

Jeannette Cook Trunk Show
This Friday & Saturday ONLY
October 16 & 17
10:00 - 6:00 both days

Jeannette tells us she's been kitting like crazy all week to bring you the best selection! Come choose from most of her most popular class kits.

There are still a few spaces in each of Jeannette's classes:

Classes will be limited to 16 students.
Third Eye Pendant- Fri, Oct 16 - 10:00 - 6 hr -level 4 pendant that will teach you how to combine the stitches you've learned - netting & Ndebele - in ways that give you a more complex result. If you haven't taken a more advanced class, and you know these stitches, there is no better instructor to help you to advance you skills than Jeannette!

Enchanting Chain - Fri, Oct 16- 6:00 - 3 hrs - Level 2/3. We wanted to bring you a class that everyone could do. SOOOO many of you have taken RAW classes at 1 Stop, so you'll have no trouble taking what you know and learning how to insert it inside a piece of chain. Imagine the possibilities! NOTE: You will learn the SINGLE version of this class.

Tiles of Antoni Gaudi - Sat, Oct 17 - 10:00 - 6 hrs - Level 4. Learn the story behind the design while Jeannette takes you through the design elements. Another great chance to take an advanced level class and learn how to combine the Peyote & RAW stitches.

Femme Florets Ring - Sat, Oct 17 - 6:00 - 3 hrs - Level 3. Just a little bit of fun for your finger. If you know Peyote, now you can learn to make peyote "perform" tricks for you.

---------------
But WAIT there's more!
(I always wanted to say that - Hannah)

We went to a show last weekend and purchased some beautiful, exciting new beads for you!

We bought limited quantities of each, and I don't expect them to last the weekend.

Get here early for best selection!

1) Introducing Susan Bailey Polymer Clay beads. You have seen some of her beads before when we brought you some to see how you like them. Alive with the vibrant color combinations and designs of an experienced artist, these are some of the most beautiful polymer clay beads I've ever seen. And her prices are UNBELIEVABLE! She could charge 3x as much!

Susan had heard great things about our store from her guild member friends who have attended classes here. She contacted us before the show and asked us if we would like to carry her beads at 1 Stop. We are pleased to add her collection as another staple of 1 Stop Bead Shop.

2) Earthenwood Ceramic Pendants & Charms. Again, you've seen a few of these before, and based on your initial response we brought you a larger selection. Earthenwood's ceramic beads are hand-formed, hand-painted and glazed with a distinctive recognizable artistic flare. This time we are introducing 2 new design lines: 1) Stoneware Box Pendants - Each 1 is a hand-crafted 1 of a kind design combining ceramics, metals, and beads in a "shadow box" design. They are the type of interesting that makes you want to study them and take them all in. These WILL get noticed! 2) Steampunk Stones - I had to ask, "What is steampunk?" and of course Stephanie knew all about it. Steampunk had actually been around since the 80's but is major hot right now. Steampunk is most simplistically described as a style that embraces the feel of the Victorian age as it was meeting the industrial revolution, which a touch of fantasy. Themes like gears, locks, clocks, buckles, fans, propellors, rivets are make steampunk instantly recognizable - once you know what it is :-)

3) S&S Lapidary Cabochons - Time from some new cabs from our favorite stone cutter - Gerry Stinnet. Limited selection.

4) New Semi-precious strands - Robin only selected the most interesting new beads she could find and in limited quantities. They are stunning and unlike anything we've had recently if ever.

Classes Available at 1 Stop Bead Shop

We still have room in some classes next week.

PMC 1 - Sparkling Pendants & Earrings - Mon, Oct 19 - Precious Metal Clay is "moldable silver." Fine silver dust is mixed w/ a bonding agent, that when burned off, leaves you w/ pure silver. That means you can mold it into anything you like, fire it and you've MADE a piece of pure silver jewelry! Very cool!

Leafy Ndebele Twist- Mon, Oct 19- Learn how to purposefully make tubular Ndebele Herringbone twist and add leaves as you go along. Not thrilled w/ the spring colors or don't like flowers? No worries - choose your favorite colors and see Lisa's sample of her near-finished necklace done in this stitch - gorgeous! Pre-req: Tubular Ndebele experience.

Polymer Clay - Sparkling Spots Necklace - Tue, Oct 20 - Take a class from the President of the Central Ohio Polymer Clay Guild. Make a beautiful freeform pendant and learn a new way to get subtle touch of glitter for lightweight necklace that looks like glass.

Soldering - Silver Filigree Pendant - Wed, Oct 21- Learn the basic shapes of filigree and how to solder them together for an open airy pendant. Variations shown. Pre-req: Intro to Wire or equivalent experience.

Pearls & Picots Cuff - Wed, Oct 21 - Know how to do Right Angle Weave? Do you know how to add rows for width? 3-row RAW riddled with seed beads and picot-edged.
Twisted Ndebele Spiral - Sat, Oct 24 - This sophisticated simple rope can be worn as a bracelet, or keep going and make a great necklace chain.

Spotlight on Our Friends: Karen Maase at 1 Stop Bead Shop

Karen Maase works in our store and teaches for us. She writes:

I took Hannah [Rosner]’s Egyptian Collar class and created the piece on the bottom. I learned a number of techniques and actually have worn it. It remains in my personal collection.

Top– This is my first beaded collar and first foray into bead embroidery. I took the first class taught by Sherri Serafini at 1 stop a couple of years back and this is the result. I love the pearls and colors but at times I think I overdid the stones. Depends on my mood.

As a sidenote, Hannah Rosner will be teaching some new classes at 1 Stop bead Shop in December. Interested? Just check out the visiting artists section of our classes page on our website: http://www.1stopbeadshop.com

The Witches’ Spell
Act IV, Scene 1 from Macbeth (1606) by William Shakespeare
A dark Cave. In the middle, a Caldron boiling. Thunder.
Enter the three Witches.
1 WITCH. Thrice the brinded cat hath mew’d.
2 WITCH. Thrice and once, the hedge-pig whin’d.
3 WITCH. Harpier cries:—’tis time! ’tis time!
1 WITCH. Round about the caldron go;
In the poison’d entrails throw.—
Toad, that under cold stone,
Days and nights has thirty-one;
Swelter’d venom sleeping got,
Boil thou first i’ the charmed pot!
ALL. Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and caldron bubble.
2 WITCH. Cool it with a baboon’s blood,
Then the charm is firm and good.

  1. Our Standard - sign up for any pair of classes - get $10 off the pair (2 people can split this discount.)
  2. Aug 11 thru Sep 10 classes - Sign up for 1 of these classes as part of your pair, and get an additional $5 off - that's $15 off a pair!

  5. Contest - Our instructors have been responding to what you love - pearls & crystals, and this quarter could easily be renamed "The Pearls & Crystals quarter." Having a little fun with that: Correctly count the number of classes that have BOTH the words PEARL and CRYSTAL in EITHER the Title OR Description. Submit your answer to Lisa at lisa@1stopbeadshop.com or in person in the store by Aug 31. All correct answers will be entered into a drawing for a FREE Pearl & Crystal Level 1 or 2 Class.

Frequently Asked Class Questions:

Q - Does 1 Stop supply the tools for class? A - Unless otherwise noted on the class schedule - NO. We do usually have some that can be shared, but we assume in most cases you are learning this new skill so you can do more of it, and you will need the tools to do it.

Q - Is my class fee refundable? A - No - unless 1 Stop is forced to cancel the class - all class fees are non-refundable. Our instructors get paid by the head and classes require a minimum of 3 students to run. Constantly shifting class numbers leads to mistakes, confusion, the possibility of causing the class to cancel and keeping others from getting in to a full class.

Q - Why is the kit/materials cost not included in the class cost? A - We schedule our classes quarterly. It is possible to sign up in August for a class that is not until December. Would you want $$ tied up in a kit that you won't get to use for 4 months? Furthermore, class fees are non-taxed education; kits must be taxed. If we include the kit fee w/ the class, then both must be taxed. Do you want to pay more taxes than necessary?

Q - When are kits available? A - Generally the night of the class, rarely beforehand.

Q - Why are some classes kits & some materials? A - Well the rules of thumb work kind of like the English language - they apply except for when they don't. Generally, however:

  • Beginning Classes & Level 1 or 2 classes that have complicated materials are kitted.
  • Wire, metals, chain maille, PMC & Polymer classes are kitted to be sure you get the correct guages etc.
  • Classes that require very personal bead choice, or with a simple supply list are usually materials. Some Level 3 & most Level 4 classes are materials, assuming you have the pre-requisite knowledge for selecting your own (and probably the stash to match).

Can I teach my friends the class I took at 1 Stop?
Copyright Laws and you
Reprinted from 1 Stop Bead Shop Newsletter

You’re new to beading, and so excited about what you just learned at the local bead store. You want to teach your friends. Is it okay to do that? The simplest answer - no.

Most stores/instructors won’t have a problem if you share your newfound knowledge with your best friend, mom, or daughter. But recently I had one of my students tell me that she was going to teach one of my classes to her entire staff at work as part of a staff bonding/morale thing. It was then that I realized that with so many new beaders taking classes at 1 Stop, some of them may be breaking copyright law without realizing it. So, here’s the basic skinny to help guide your decisions

A stitch or wire bend/coil is NOT copyright protected - they are in the public domain and have been used for centuries.

ALL written directions ARE copyright protected. It is NEVER okay to copy (by hand or on a machine) or teach from someone else’s directions unless you have their permission.

How the stitch/wire/etc. is put together is a DESIGN and designs ARE copyright protected. It is not okay to teach someone’s design without their permission.

Classes taken at the local bead store support the salaries of the staff and the instructor. When you teach classes that you learned at the local bead store, you are taking money out of someone’s pocket that earns their living this way.

Bottom line, when in doubt, ask the store or instructor. They will appreciate your concern for their welfare.

Have you seen our new bling?

Inspired by the beautiful Czech cut crystal chandeliers Lisa saw while she was in Prague, she had a brand new bit of bling installed in the 1 Stop Bead Shop store. Come on in and see our new chandelier, hung, appropriately in front of our Czech glass Preciousa crystals.
