The Inside Scoop on Preciosa:
What is it and why have I never heard of it before?

Preciosa is lead Crystal. It is like Swarovski with all the bling thatyou’ve come to love, but with a lower price tag. So why have you never heard of it before?

In the late 19th century Daniel Swarovski developed the technology to machine cut tiny crystals in what was then known as Bohemia -one of the great glass bead making centers of the world. As a move to protect his invention from competitors anxious to duplicate the technologyhe moved his company to the more secluded regions of Austria.

That move proved to be more fortuitous than he imagined. After WWII Bohemia was annexed by the Soviet Union. A potential competitor, founded the same year the Soviets took power, was now a state owned business. While Swarovski grew and traded on the free market, Preciosa was largely unheard of outside of the iron curtain.

With the fall of Mr. Gorbachev’s wall in the early 90’s, Preciosa has emerged as an aggressive player on the world market.

1 Stop Bead Shop is the only store in Central Ohio carrying this stunning line of crystals.

We know you love bling - now you have even more choices!

Goodbye to Kathy Luli

Please join the staff of 1 Stop as we say goodbye to one of our earliest and most prolific instructors - Kathy Luli.

Kathy joined the teaching team at 1Stop shortly after we opened in 2005. Since then she has taught nearly a class a week in various bead weaving stitches. Her unique style introduced us to delicate bead laces and sculptural peyote ornaments.

She still has a few classes before she leaves:
Wavy Flag Bracelet - Wed Nov 19 - 6:00
Stars & Snowflakes - Wed Dec 3 - 6:00

Kathy is leaving Ohio with her husband to join her daughter in Oklahoma where her new home is
under construction.

Kathy, we will miss you and look forward to seeing you each year at Bead & Button.

Lisa Busch

1 Stop Bead Shop
2752 Festival Lane, on the Northwest Side
(614-573-6452)

Q: What's the vision behind your store?
A: My concept was that it would be the Cheers of beading -- the place where everybody knows your name. It has become a community of beaders.

Q: When did you begin beading?
A: Six years ago. The sparkle is probably what gets you first, but the thing that has kept me going is beadwork.

Q: When did you decide to start the store?
A: I had been a stay-at-home mom for 10 years. I decided it was time for me to go back to work, but I wasn't sure what I wanted to do. My husband and I were talking one night, and he said, "What do you want to do?" I said, "Open a bead store." That was in December (2004), and I signed the contract in March.

Q: What does your store look like inside?
A: Our motto is "Come sit and bead with us." I've given up a lot of retail space for two big tables with everything you need. All the walls are draped in beads -- it's pretty and it's sparkly. It's not a bad place to hang out all day.

Q: Are most of the people who come in women?
A: Our demographic is women 30 to 60, but, you know, we do get some boys who are really into it. We have one boy, about 12 years old, who comes in with his mom, makes his own designs and sells them.

Q: What kind of beads are the most popular?
A: Our customers like bling. If it's sparkly and it's shiny, they like it. We don't do a lot of business in wood because customers don't buy it.

Q: You have beads with a Buckeye theme. Are they a big seller?
A: We really stock up for the season.

Q: What kind of classes do you offer?
A: For . . . September through December, we have 109 classes. It's not just putting beads on a string -- but that's fun, too.

Q: Do you need to take a class to bead?
A: For basic bead stringing, we can show you on the spot in a few minutes. You can . . . take a 10-minute lesson and walk out the door with something.

Q: What's your favorite part of the job?
A: People say, "I'm not creative." I encourage them to take a class. I love seeing women find something within themselves they didn't know existed.

Can I teach my friends the class I took at 1 Stop?

Copyright Laws & You

You’re new to beading, and so excited about what you just learned at the local bead store. You want to teach your friends. Is it okay to do that?

The simplest answer - no.

Most stores/instructors won’t have a problem if you share your newfound knowledge with your best friend, mom, or daughter. But recently I had one of my students tell me that she
was going to teach one of my classes to her entire staff at work as part of a staff bonding/morale thing. It was then that I realized that with so many new beaders taking classes at 1 Stop,
some of them may be breaking copy- right law without realizing it. So, here’s the basic skinny to help guide your decisions.

1.A stitch or wire bend/coil is NOT copyright protected - they are in the public domain and have been used for centuries.

2.ALL written directions ARE copyright protected. It is NEVER okay to copy (by hand or on a machine) or teach from someone else’s directions unless you have their permission.

3.How the stitch/wire/etc. is put to-gether is a DESIGN and designs ARE copyright protected. It is not okay to teach someone’s design without their permission.

4.Classes taken at the local bead store support the salaries of the staff and the instructor. When you teach classes that you learned at the local bead store, you are taking money out of someone’s pocket that earns their living this way. Bottom line, when in doubt, ask the store or instructor. They will appreciate your concern for their welfare.

Congratulations Tracy Van Niel!

Congratulations Tracy Van Niel!

1 Stop Bead Shop is graced with many talented instructors. Tracy Van Niel, a talented artist who
teaches our beaded cabochon classes, recently was a finalist in the Bead Dreams competition at
the Bead & Button show in Milwaukee.

Of the hundreds of pieces submitted, only a few in each category become finalists and go on display at the Bead & Button show!

Tracy’s beautiful bead embroidered collar will be on display in July at 1 Stop Bead Shop and will beshown in the Bead Dreams Issue of the Bead& Button Magazine.
Congratulations Tracy!

Look for Tracy’s next bead embroidered cabochon class in fall class schedule release.

New items from Bead & Button

Hello Bead Friend!

Robin and Lisa (and therefore the entire staff except for Hannah who's busy being a bum in Taos) have been working overtime (literally) to get all the new exciting finds from the Bead & Button show ready to show you. We would like to invite you to come see everything we brought back before it gets blended in with the rest of the merchandise. Please join us this week, June 16-21. We have it all set up and waiting for you to drool over!

Here are just a few of the goodies you don't want to miss:

What does this have to do with beads you may ask? Well, this is an Abelman vase. He makes beads too. SO, just imagine a blown glass bead made under a fuming hood, with glass made from sand that he mixes himself. They are perhaps the most gorgeous focal beads I have ever seen. Robin had to MAKE Lisa stop buying them, because she would have spent the entire budget there. We only bought 30, and we're down to 14, so you'll want to be here early for the best selection. Hannah had one shipped to her in Taos since she'd been meaning to get one for years. As a side note, don't lick the beads, even though they look like they are candy.

I wouldn't be surprised if they completely sold out by the end of the week!

Lisa was in a real lampwork mood, so we brought home tons of new lampwork from artists you're familiar with like Nikki Thornburg (recently a gallery feature next to Hannah in Bead Unique), Sher Berman, and Louise Little's Desert Bloom Designs. We've been sold out of Sher and Louise's beads for months! And, Nikki just added a complete new line of silver on glass which we picked up, as well as these really cool flat spiral disks (wait till you see the sample Robin made from them - Danielle said it was the "coolest piece of jewelry I've ever worn.").

We also picked up a few new artists, of which one of the coolest was JoElla Johnson with her Tantrum beads. She tells me that these beads are what happened when she had a temper tantrum w/ glass one day. You just have to see them to imagine all the possibilities! One of her beads in featured in The 2nd All New Micro Macrame by Kris Buchanan (we carry it in the store).

We especially liked Grace's beads - made in America (she promises), she has trained several lampwork artists to make them to her specs, so that you can get strands of similar beads and re-order them again and again to fill those customer orders. Sounds like they might be plain, but they are really quite pretty, the perfect size for bracelets, and focals are available to match!

Oh, and then there are these neat new furnace glass bracelet parts. Just add a center bead and clasp and you have a very cool, attention getting bracelet.Or try a necklace curve on chain. Lisa really wants to make one of these w/ a spiral or Ndebele rope! The squiggles are way cool for earrings too!

Didn't we tell you Lisa went nuts for glass?! :-)

For those of you that have been anxious for a new influx of cabochons, we didn't skimp. We bought over $1500 of stone, art glass and dichroic glass. (The new black/white, and the new pink/purple give you new colors to work with.)

We also picked up several thousand $$ in new Czech glass. The one we were most excited about is a 4mm Firepolish bead in TRUE Purple.

Don't worry semi-precious fans - we took care of you too! - to the tune of $6000 worth of new semi-precious beads and focals. We are finally adding a line of beads for our more discerning customers - beautiful gem cut rondells in Spinel, Sapphire, Tourmaline, Iolite, Sunstone, Garnet and more - scrumptious strands starting at $60 and up. Got more of the ever popular dyed Crazy Lace Agate too!

What's left? Oh, silver - hilltribe and bali. And Copper. And Books - fabulous designs for peyote pouches that can be put on a form and stitched right on the pattern - innovative and EASY!

Okay, so are you getting the idea that you don't want to miss this preview?
See ya' this week!

Our staff of 14 instructors have more than 100 years of combined experience creating and teaching the art of jewelry making. Please visit our classes page to view our current class schedule.

We are also a full-service bead store, which means we attempt to bring you a wide selection of everything you will need to make and sell your jewelry. We boast the largest selection of Czech glass pressed and firepolished beads, Japanese seed beads, and copper beads and findings in Central Ohio.

In addition to those, you'll also find an extensive selection of Miyuki Delicas, Swarovski crystals, Semi-precious, Sterling silver and gold filled beads and findings, PMC, sterling and gold filled wire and chain, tools, books, and everything you need to display and package your jewelry for sale. We are the only store in Central Ohio carrying the Artistic Wire line of craft wire, and the second largest distributor of the Tierra Cast brand of findings in all of Ohio.

We encourage Ohio Artisans in their crafts of Polymer Clay and Lampwork Bead making by carrying their beads in stock and doing trunk shows featuring their unique talents.
With an inventory that grows every week, we are your 1 Stop Bead Shop!

Don't know anything about jewelry making and don't want to wait for a class? No worries! We have tables on our showroom where you can, "Come Sit and Bead with Us!" and knowledgable and talented staff that can walk you through the entire process from assistance with bead selection to pointers for using the tools and finishing your jewelry. Beading is fun and you can do it!
